What does ‘WordPress’ mean?

WordPress is a piece of software for building websites. There are others, but WordPress is way the most popular. About 43% of all websites worldwide are built with WordPress.

WordPress is also a ‘content management system’ or CMS. This just means it’s easy to edit, add and organise new content without a developer’s help.

WordPress is so popular because:

  • It’s free and open source. You own your website and there’s nothing to stop you edit, customise and extend it as you wish.
  • It’s easy to customise. Additional software available, such as themes and plugins, make it easy to change the look and functionality of your website without needing to code.
  • There’s community support. There’s a huge, active community of resources and developers who can help and troubleshoot.
  • Maintenance and security. WordPress is regularly maintained to keep it up to date and protected, and additional free security plugins are available.
  • Search engine friendly. WordPress comes with many technical SEO features out of the box, making it easier to rank.

What WordPress alternatives are there?

  • Drupal.
  • Joomla.
  • Wix.
  • Squarespace.
  • WordPress.com (the paid version of WordPress).
  • Webflow

Ecommerce alternatives

WordPress has a free ecommerce add-on called WooCommerce, but these are some alternatives:

  • Shopify.
  • BigCommerce.
  • Adobe Commerce.
  • Prestashop.
  • OpenCart.

What about Elementor?

Elementor is a ‘page builder’. Its big selling point is that it has a drag and drop interface that make it easier for beginners to build websites.

However, it’s built on top of WordPress, so it’s not an alternative to it.

Others like Elementor include Divi, Beaver Builder and Generatepress.
